Wolverhampton Casuals return to North West Counties Football League Division One action tomorrow afternoon with a huge local derby against our nearest neighbours, Wednesfield Community. Kick-off at The Cottage Ground is at 3.00 p.m.
Form and league position often count for little in a local derby and tomorrow should be no different. Both sides will be determined to claim the points, with neither likely to give any quarter.
The opposition
Like Bilston Town, Wednesfield were moved laterally by the Football Association during the summer reorganisation of the National League System, switching from the Midland Football League to the North West Counties Football League.
New manager Kyle Wainwright and his team are assembling a competitive squad and have adapted well to their new surroundings. Wednesfield sit ninth after nine league matches, with four wins, one draw and four defeats for a total of 13 points.
Current form
Their league victories have come at home to Dawley Town (3–2) and Telford Town, and away to Eccleshall (3–2) and newly promoted Crewe (1–0).
Wednesfield exited the FA Vase in the first qualifying round following a 4–1 home defeat to Sutton United. They responded in the Macron Cup last weekend, drawing 1–1 with Dawley Town before progressing to the second round with a 4–2 penalty shoot-out win. They also reached the first round of the Edward Chase Cup after beating Widnes Town 5–4 on penalties following another 1–1 draw.
Players to watch out for
Rio Tetsell leads Wednesfield's scoring chart with three goals. Harvey Dangerfield, Harreson Clarke and Lawson Birch have each scored twice, with all four players having started 11 matches.
Tetsell has also collected four Player of the Match awards, underlining his consistency. Jonathan Rodley, Jason Novakou and Dangerfield have received the other awards.
Casuals arrive with momentum
Wolverhampton Casuals head into the derby after two cup victories in a week. Last Saturday, we progressed in the Macron Cup with a 4–3 penalty shoot-out win at Foley Meir following a 1–1 draw. On Wednesday, Casuals ended Wombourne All Stars’ outstanding start to the season with a 4–1 victory. The result halted a five-match winning run for Wombourne. The win set up a big Second Round JW Hunt Cup tie when Casuals will travel to MFL Division One leaders Gornal Athletic.
Manager Dean Gill hopes to have virtually the entire squad available for selection as Casuals begin an important spell. After tomorrow’s derby, Casuals travel to Cheadle Heath Nomads on Monday evening for a Edward Chase Cup tie before welcoming Southwell City to Brinsford Stadium next Saturday in the First Round of the FA Vase.
