Wolverhampton Casuals progressed to the second round of the Macron Cup with a hard-earned penalty shoot-out victory at Foley Meir, holding their nerve to come through 4–3 from the penalty spot.

With Casuals fielding a much-depleted side for the League Cup encounter in Staffordshire due to injuries and availability, it was never likely to be a straightforward afternoon. In truth, it was a scrappy affair for long periods, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut opportunities during the opening stages.

Casuals, though, made the breakthrough on 19 minutes. A well-delivered Lewis Gill free-kick found Leo Wood at the far post, and the forward rose to head the ball home and give the visitors the lead.

Foley Meir continued to pose a threat going forward, but Casuals defended resolutely and worked hard to protect their advantage.

Casuals thought they had doubled their lead when Scott picked the ball up on the right, cut across the box and fed Cook, who calmly tucked the ball into the corner of the net. Unfortunately for the visitors, the assistant referee’s flag went up for offside, and the goal was ruled out.

The home side eventually found their equaliser in the 38th minute. Full-back Gill was dispossessed on the touchline, allowing the ball to fall to Foot, who produced a superb strike into the top corner. There was little Amos could do in the Casuals goal as the ball flew beyond him.

The sides went into the break level at 1–1.

Casuals were called upon to defend again early in the second half, with Foot finding space 18 yards from goal, although his effort was struck straight at Amos.

The visitors then had a golden opportunity to regain the lead in the 72nd minute. K. McIntosh was released one-on-one with Foley Meir goalkeeper Parks, but the advancing keeper stood up well to deny the Casuals striker from 18 yards.

Just a minute later, Casuals almost fashioned another opening. Cook produced an excellent crossfield ball to pick out Leo Wood on the right, but Wood’s first-time effort flew wide.

Neither side could find a winner during the remaining minutes, meaning the tie would be decided by penalties.

And it was Casuals who showed the greater composure when it mattered most.

Foley Meir took the first kick, with Ellen’s giving Amos no chance. Cook then calmly converted for Casuals.

Foote restored the home side’s advantage before Declan Hutchings levelled for Casuals. Dollerchin then put Foley Meir back in front, while Zach Poskitt unfortunately sent his effort over the bar.

However, Foley Meir couldn’t capitalise, with Zach Robinson also firing over.
McIntosh then stepped up and confidently found the corner of the net for Casuals, before another Foley Meir penalty was missed by Tyler Mistry, leaving the scores level at 3–3.

With the pressure mounting, Harry Livingston saw his penalty saved by Amos brilliantly, giving Casuals the opportunity to finish the job.

That opportunity fell to Lewis Gill.

Gill showed superb composure to calmly place his spot-kick into the corner of the net, sending Casuals through to the second round of the Macron Cup.

It may not have been the most memorable performance of the season, but cup football is ultimately about finding a way through — and that is exactly what Casuals did.

With a depleted squad travelling to Staffordshire, the players showed plenty of resilience to stay in the contest and then keep their composure when the outcome came down to penalties.

The performance may not have been vintage Casuals, but progression is what matters and Casuals are safely through to the second round.

Casuals return to Brinsford Stadium this Wednesday evening when in form Wombourne All Stars who have scored 31 goals in their opening five league games visit to play a First Round JW Hunt Cup tie, the winners will face Gornal at Garden Walk kick off 7.45 pm.
