Wolverhampton Casuals made the short trip along the M54 and returned with all three points after Wood’s dramatic 95th-minute winner secured a deserved 1-0 victory at Telford Town.

The result provided the perfect response to last week’s FA Vase exit, extending The Cassies’ impressive league run to five matches unbeaten, including four wins and a draw. The management team made a single enforced change, Kieran Cook is serving a three game ban, in came new signing Jack Sang who joined from Darlaston Town

Telford have undergone a significant transformation since the start of the season, and their current league position arguably fails to reflect the quality now within their squad. Casuals, however, approached the contest with confidence and produced a performance founded on possession, patience and attacking intent.

The visitors controlled much of the opening half, circulating the ball neatly and probing for openings in the Telford defence. Their dominance was not always matched by decisiveness in the final third, though, with Casuals occasionally opting for an extra pass or cross when a shot appeared the better option.

Rowland posed a constant threat on the right, forcing Perry to work tirelessly throughout the afternoon. Casuals’ first clear opportunity arrived in the 17th minute when Jake Pearson threaded a superb pass through to debutant Jack Sang. Sang turned sharply inside the box and fired towards goal, but Morris produced a brave diving block to deny him.

The loose ball fell to Sang’s strike partner, Callum Knowles, who immediately switched play out to Rowland. The winger drove into the area before going down under a challenge, but referee Lockwood dismissed the appeals for a penalty.

Casuals continued to apply pressure, keeping Telford pinned back for extended periods. Their first effort on target came in the 28th minute, although substitute Shaquille McDonald’s shot lacked the power to trouble goalkeeper Stan Amos, who gathered comfortably.

Two minutes later, Rowland again found space on the right. Reaching the byline, he delivered a dangerous cross into the area, but Telford reacted quickly to block the delivery and clear the danger.

The pressure was beginning to tell. In the 33rd minute, Knowles found Sang with a well-weighted pass, and the debutant’s cross triggered a goalmouth scramble before the hosts finally managed to force the ball clear.

Telford remained capable of threatening, particularly from set pieces. In the 35th minute, former Casuals player Reece Taylor delivered a free kick into the box, but amid another scramble, Casuals goalkeeper Stan Amos remained composed and gathered safely.

Casuals responded immediately. Two minutes later, Knowles sent an excellent cross into the area, where Sang was again on hand to shoot. Once more, however, a determined Telford defender threw himself in the way.

Despite controlling possession for long spells, Casuals were almost punished just before half-time. Dandy’s inviting cross picked out McDonald, but the Telford striker could only steer his full-stretch effort wide from 10 yards whilst under pressure from Lewis Gill.

The visitors went into the interval frustrated not to be ahead, but encouraged by their control and the number of promising positions they had created. Greater precision in front of goal would be required after the break.

That breakthrough remained elusive for much of the second half, yet Casuals continued to press with purpose. Their persistence was eventually rewarded in the most dramatic fashion.

With the clock showing 95 minutes, Kirton delivered from the left, his cross caused panic, and Wood attacked the cross superbly, timing his run before smashing the finish home from eight yards.

It was a decisive moment and a fitting reward for Casuals’ sustained pressure. The late strike secured three valuable points, another clean sheet and a fifth consecutive league match without defeat.

After the disappointment of the Vase exit, this was an emphatic response from Wolverhampton Casuals. Four wins and a draw from their last five league matches underline the momentum The Cassies are building.
