Wolverhampton Casuals secured a deserved 2–0 victory over Alsager to maintain their place in the league’s top five.

After last weekends loss at Sandbach Town, yesterdays home game was important to return to winning ways. The clubs management team had a busy week, with four new signings, two making their debuts and a third coming off the bench to seal the points. There were three changes to the starting XI, Ben Podmore was unavailable, and Jayden Kirk was recalled to Newcastle Town, James Rowland dropped down to the bench, in came new signings Zach Campbell-Jackson and Cian McInstosh, Archie Kirton stepped up from the bench.

The visitors had the first chance inside a minute when an under hit back pass presented John Rose with an opportunity from 10 yards, but he struck the crossbar. Casuals thought they had taken the lead in the 10th minute when Cook fired into the bottom corner, but referee Barker ruled the goal out for offside.

The home side enjoyed good possession, with Kirton, McIntosh and Cook combining well. Cook’s effort was saved by Alsager goalkeeper Peake, who was called into action again in the 31st minute to tip the skipper’s 22-yard strike over the bar.

Alsager had a chance to take the lead in the 25th minute after forward Rose was brought down in the box. He took the resulting penalty but made it easy for Amos, who saved low to his right.

Casuals edged a stubborn first half and made the perfect start after the break. In the 46th minute, Liam Kirton was played through on goal and calmly slotted the ball past Peake.

Three minutes later, Pearson reached the byline and delivered for Kirton, who acrobatically volleyed narrowly wide. Alsager threatened an equaliser in the 54th minute when Stephens’ 30-yard free kick rattled the bar, while Amos produced another important save in the 61st minute to tip Geddes’ stinging effort over.

Casuals sealed the points in the 73rd minute through debutant substitute David. His clever touch turned the defender on the edge of the box before he smashed the ball into the corner, giving Peake no chance.

The afternoon ended on a sour note when Lewis Gill received his second yellow card and was dismissed in the 85th minute, but Casuals held on comfortably for a valuable three points.

It was an impressive performance from a changed side, combining good football and defensive resilience to secure a result that keeps the Casuals in the top five.
