Wolverhampton Casuals got their 2026/27 North West Counties Division One South home campaign off to the perfect start with a deserved 2-0 victory over a determined Market Drayton side at Brinsford Stadium.

The hosts almost made the ideal start inside the opening minute when Cook was brought down inside the penalty area, only for the referee to wave away strong appeals for a spot-kick. It set the tone for a physical encounter, although clear-cut chances were at a premium during the opening exchanges.

Casuals’ first real opportunity arrived from a Lewis Gill free-kick, with Cook meeting the delivery only to see his glancing header flash narrowly wide.

The breakthrough came in the 27th minute. After capitalising on a loose clearance, Hutchings saw his initial effort blocked but reacted quickest to the rebound before calmly firing a right-footed finish into the bottom-right corner to give the hosts a deserved lead.

The goal sparked Market Drayton into life, with Wood leading the visitors’ attacking efforts. Goalkeeper Amos was called into action on two occasions, producing a pair of excellent saves in the 35th and 38th minutes to preserve Casuals’ advantage heading into the closing stages of the first half.

Casuals thought they may have been handed a numerical advantage just before the interval when Storey raced clear on the counter and was brought down by Handley. However, despite home appeals for a red card, referee King opted against taking further action, leaving the visitors with eleven men at the break.

The second half developed into a closely contested affair, with possession evenly shared as both teams battled for control. Casuals’ back line, expertly marshalled by Podmore, stood firm throughout and limited Market Drayton to very few clear opportunities.

The decisive moment arrived in the 63rd minute. Pearson won possession in midfield before finding Archie Kirton, who cut inside onto his stronger foot and unleashed a magnificent strike from 25 yards that flew into the top corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance and effectively sealing all three points.

Market Drayton continued to push for a way back into the contest, but Casuals defended resolutely, with their disciplined and organised display ensuring Amos recorded a well-earned clean sheet.

It proved to be a professional performance from Wolverhampton Casuals, combining clinical finishing with a solid defensive display to claim their first home league victory of the season and three valuable points.
