Casuals Complete a late Dramatic Comeback to Book a place in the Macron Cup Third Round Draw

Simon Cox

Three goals in the last 10 minutes allows Casuals Macron Cup run to continue.

Wolverhampton Casuals produced a stunning late comeback at Brinsford Lane, scoring twice in the final stages to overturn a 2–1 deficit and defeat Crewe 3–2 in the Macron Cup second round.

Leo Wood struck in the 93rd minute to complete a remarkable turnaround and send Casuals into the third round draw after a contest played in wet and blustery conditions.

Casuals dominated the opening exchanges, controlling possession and repeatedly testing the Crewe defence. Rowland was a constant threat on the right, delivering a series of dangerous balls into the box.

The hosts created opportunities, although none proved clear-cut. Callum Knowles and Sang both tested Crewe goalkeeper Melvin, who dealt comfortably with their efforts.

Against the run of play, Crewe took the lead in the 32nd minute. Substitute Cook finished from 10 yards after excellent work from Hajri on the right, punishing Casuals for failing to convert their early pressure.

Casuals continued to control the game but went into half-time trailing 1–0.

The pattern remained unchanged after the interval, with Casuals dominating possession and pressing for an equaliser in the opening exchanges

Lewis Gill’s set-piece delivery was a constant threat. In the 50th minute, one of his corners found Alex Forshaw, whose stretching header cleared the crossbar. Three minutes later, the same combination produced another chance, but Forshaw again headed over.
The chances kept coming, Poskitt’s fine run and cross in the 55th minute picked out Knowles, whose header from 10 yards narrowly missed the target. Liam Kirton then went close from distance, sending a 25-yard effort just over the bar in the 61st minute.

Crewe had offered little in attack, but they almost doubled their lead two minutes later. Amir Hajjari broke through on goal before being closed down, and his effort scraped past the right-hand post.

Casuals resumed their assault, with Kirton’s cross in the 74th minute finding Forshaw. His header, however, drifted narrowly wide.

As the clock ran down, Crewe appeared increasingly likely to hold on. Casuals, though, refused to relent.

Their persistence was rewarded in the 82nd minute. Knowles flicked the ball into the path of Jack Sang, who kept his composure to slot past Melvin and level the scores.

The momentum shifted immediately, but Crewe responded almost at once. Joshua Marris was allowed space inside the Casuals penalty area and took full advantage, steering his shot beyond Amos and into the bottom-left corner to restore the visitors’ lead.

Casuals were behind again, but they continued to attack.

In the 90th minute, Gill delivered another dangerous cross and Knowles met it decisively, directing the ball into the corner to make it 2–2.

With penalties looming, Casuals completed the turnaround in the third minute of stoppage time. Wood found space inside the box and calmly finished passed Crewe’s keeper to send Brinsford Lane into celebration.

The final whistle confirmed a dramatic 3–2 victory and a place in the Macron Cup third round.

Casuals had dominated for long periods, created the majority of the attacking pressure and refused to be discouraged by twice falling behind. Their late surge was the decisive factor, earning them a deserved reward for their persistence and attacking intent.

Wolverhampton Casuals return top league action next Saturday at Brinsford Stadium when the in form Allscott Heath visit for an important game for both clubs kick off 3 pm.
