Tomorrow will see a huge game for both Wolverhampton Casuals and Southwell City at Brinsford Stadium who will meet for the first time in a First Round FA Cup Vase tie.
Southwell City’s home is in Brindley at The Centenary Sports Ground located north east of Nottingham halfway between Nottingham and Newark. This season is the first time that The Zebras have reached the first round in this competition. In the First Preliminary Round they travelled to Leicester St. Andrews drawing 1-1 in normal time and proceeded through into the Second Qualifying Round winning 5-4 from the penalty spot. In the next round they welcomed South Normington Athletic to The Centenary Sports Ground winning 2-1.
Southwell City have been members of the NLS since 2022/23 and play their league football at step 6 in The GEC Hire Fleet United Counties Football League Division One. They have always played in their current and in four seasons the highest place finish has been 12th and the lowest 16th. This season they have had an outstanding start and going into tomorrows game are on a five game unbeaten league & cup run, but even more impressive is that they have the largest number of league clean sheets nine in fourteen games for any non league club in the country between steps 1 -7.
The Zebras are third in the league after fourteen league fixtures, winning eight, drawing four and losing two, but have scored 26 goals and conceded just 11. Looking at their stats, Southwell City have a very settled squad. Scoring charts are headed by Zack Casburn with seven goals followed by Christopher Okoye on six goals, Ayleal Dill has scored five goals in six games and Joshua Gardner and Christopher Bowles have three goals each.
On Tuesday evening The Zebra’s travelled to Pinchbeck United winning 3-0 with three first half goals from Bowles, Casburn and Okoye.
Southwell City was formed in 1893 and plays its football in the shadow of the magnificent Norman Minster which became a Cathedral. The club over the next 50/60 years formed many guises and was re-formed in 1995 and currently plays across two grounds and has over 400 competing players across 41 teams, spanning age groups from five to veterans, including boys, girls, ladies, men’s and disability football.
Wolverhampton Casuals go into tomorrow’s big game off the back of a 2-1 cup win at Cheadle Heath Nomads on Monday evening, Keiran Cooke scoring an injury time winner to give progress the club into the second round draw for the Edward Case Cup. Following the win the players have trained a couple of times in preparation for tomorrow’s fixture.
Cassies are in good form; they sit second place in The North West Counties Division One South and go into tomorrow’s fixture with an eight game unbeaten run in league and cup football and they will be desperate to continue that streak.
But there will be changes to the match day squad Cian MacIntosh and Nathan Scott cup tied, Manager Dean Gill will have to juggle his squad which does carry some injuries that are showing concern, including long-term absentee James Rowland who returned to the squad on Monday evening playing the last few minutes of the game, along with centre-half Ben Podmore. Some players are bound to require a late fitness test before tomorrow’s fixture and there may be some late decisions needing to be made on the make-up and set up of the match day squad and starting eleven.
As always tomorrow’s game kicks off at 3.00 p.m.
Admission: Adults £7.00, Concessions £4.00, Under 16’s FREE if accompanied with an adult.
Printed Programmes £2.00 from the pay hut and there will of course be the usual ‘Golden Goal’ on sale.
Because of the limited parking at Brinsford Stadium we urge everybody to turn up as early as possible, when they can take advantage of watching SKY sports in the bar, hot and cold food will be available in the café and of course the bar will be open all afternoon.
Tomorrow is an important fixture for the club, and we would urge all Wolverhampton Casuals supporters to come and support their club.
We hope to see a good crowd at Brinsford Stadium tomorrow afternoon.
